Reflection

Throughout the duration of my session the main goal was to teach young adults fundamental skills such as passing, control, dribbling and keeping the ball and also getting these players to understand the knowledge of these skills and what these players need to perform them. Throughout the session and especially in the cues and inquiry episodes as the coach I believe I used the teaching style of guided discovery quite well, getting players to think about set skills needed for the drills such as how they should pass, how their body should be positioned when receiving, keeping and passing the ball and how players should keep control of the ball whilst also using a little bit of command coaching where necessary. The use of these coaching styles paired well with these athletes as they remained focused, engaged and prepared to answer set questions to help enhance their learning and understanding of how they should perform these established fundamental elements to the game, the communication aspect and how these players responded to the cue questions proved these players were showing these signs of engagement and learning. By using a task teaching style, it helped me as a coach to provide my feedback on players and also use this feedback to give players confidence and help these athletes understand what they were doing right and a thing or two on what they could improve on or should be thinking about, using this teaching style also helped me keep players engaged in the drills. When inquired at the end of the session about 3 different aspects these athletes learned throughout the duration of the session, they answered quickly with ease which shows how engaged these players were but also reflects on the session of how much they learned and the knowledge they took out of the session. Players seemed like they enjoyed the session and drills with the overall feeling amongst the players was enjoyment, engagement and boosted morale. In future sessions I would hope to use more athletes and would allow me to use more coaching styles such as small group coaching, convergent discovery and divergent discovery further and the use of these styles paired with styles used already in the coaching session would only further enhance the athlete's skills and knowledge and hopefully athletes' enjoyment and connectiveness with the sport and each other.
